Yuan Dynasty Porcelain

The Yuan dynasty (1271–1368) was founded by the Mongols under Kublai Khan. During its rule the potters of Jingdezhen brought painting in cobalt blue under the glaze to maturity and also painted in copper red, a colour much harder to fire well. The blue and white they made in the 14th century shaped Chinese porcelain for centuries afterwards. The Yuan dynasty page tells the history.

About Yuan Dynasty Porcelain

Collectors look for heavy, well-potted bodies, dense painting arranged in bands, dark cobalt that can gather in blackish spots, and unglazed bases that often fired to an orange tone. Yuan porcelain carries no reign marks, so it is dated by form, body and painting. Our guide to Yuan blue and white sets out the signs. Underglaze red has a page of its own, and our history of Chinese blue and white porcelain places the Yuan in the longer story.

This collection is mostly blue and white: large chargers and dishes, vases, jars and a bowl, painted with fish and lotus, phoenixes, qilin and figure scenes, with some pieces in underglaze red. Several are catalogued as late Yuan to early Ming, where the two periods meet.

Prices are given on request. Use the Request price form on any available piece and we reply by email with the price and further photographs if you would like them. We accept bank transfer, card or cryptocurrency, ship fully insured by tracked express courier, and all sales are final.
