Description

A large blue and white covered jar of broad, high-shouldered form. The body carries four lobed panels framed by raised beaded borders, each filled in relief with a different flowering plant growing from a rock: the leaves in deep underglaze blue, the flowers in red, red-brown and amber tones, set against a recessed ground. Above, cloud-collar lappets painted with lotus and floral scrolls alternate with ribbon-like cloud motifs on the shoulder, and a floral scroll circles the short neck. Round the lower body, a band of upright panels encloses floral sprigs and small rings.

The domed cover has a seated lion finial in blue, radiating panels of trefoil motifs and a lattice band round the side. The flat base is unglazed, showing throwing rings and a warm buff tone.
