Antique Chinese Yuan Dynasty Porcelain Vase with Phoenix Qilin Ducks and Fish
This large Yuan Dynasty porcelain vase is exquisitely painted in brilliant tones of cobalt oxide blue. The base begins with slender arches with a lotus flower motif that makes way for curled stems enclosed in two medallions, followed by two beautiful small portraits, one at each lower end, of fish surrounded by algae and water flowers. In the middle part, two portraits representing the same scene: a fabulous Qilin, symbol of prosperity, next to a majestic phoenix, representative of virtue and grace.
Both mythological creatures are delicately detailed, surrounded by an abundant variety of roses, lotus flowers, leaves, stems, and a pumpkin. Above these are two portraits with a goose swimming calmly, surrounded by more lotus, grass, and water flowers. Above, a double medallion marks the beginning of the shoulders, exquisitely illustrated with the figure of a glorious phoenix in full flight, surrounded by lotus flowerd and leafy stems. Above these is a waisted neck exceptionally decorated with roaring waves, followed by a floral scroll of ovoid figures ending in a flared rim with rounded edges.
