A blue and white dish with rounded sides and a flat rim. In the centre, within a double-line circle, a spotted fish with a spiny dorsal fin swims among feathery water plants, tall leaves and floating weed. The sides are painted with a continuous scroll of peony blossoms and leaves, and the rim with a diaper border of lattice diamonds.
The outside is painted with a band of upright panels, each with a cloud-shaped motif, under a white glaze with a faint blue tint. The base is unglazed and shows the spiralling marks of throwing, fired to a pale buff with darker patches. We attribute the dish to the early Ming dynasty.
