Description

A large celadon vase with a wide trumpet neck, a full rounded body and a spreading foot. Incised rings circle the neck below the flared mouth, and the neck itself is carved with peony sprays. A band of leafy scroll runs round the shoulder, the body carries large peony sprays standing out in low relief, and the lower body is carved with a band of fluting above the foot. The glaze is a soft olive green, glossy where it pools in the carving, and it has drawn back in places to show small spots of iron-brown body.

The foot and base are unglazed, the base showing throwing rings and fired to an orange-brown. The vase was fired standing on the kiln floor and shows no stand mark. One side sat too close to the fire. We attribute it to the Song dynasty; our guide to Song dynasty ceramics gives the background.
