A large celadon plate with rounded sides and a lightly notched rim. The centre is moulded in low relief with a qilin, its scaled body among flowering plants. A band of dense floral scrolls fills the sides, and a wave band runs round the outer rim. The outside is moulded with a ring of long, overlapping lotus petals. The glaze is a pale sea-green that settles more thickly in the hollows of the moulding, with a fine crackle.
On the base, the glaze covers the centre and the foot ring, leaving a broad unglazed ring between them that has fired a warm brown, with some kiln grit. We attributed the plate to the Song dynasty.
